Live in the world like a stranger, or better yet, like a traveller... who stops for short time en-route, never losing focus of his destination. Death is the destination, a blessing if prepared for. When the reality of death enters the heart & one begins serious preparations for this journey to Akhirah, then that is a sign that Allah has opened his heart for Islam & he journeys on a light from his Rabb.

He wrote the famous book of poetry, Mathnawi Shareef, in which many lessons are derived from the stories mentioned, one of which is the story of Mahmood Ghaznawi & the 5 thieves, illustrating the importance of Ma’rifat of Allah.
