Love of Dunya – root of all evils
Islahi Majlis, at Musjid ut Taqwa on March 30, 2015
It is important to understand what is classified as “Dunya” in order to eliminate “Hubbud-dunya” – love of the world from the hearts. Dunya refers to all those things which distract us from and make us negligent of Allah- this is not confined to material things as is commonly misunderstood, but could include acts of spirituality if it falls within this definition. Having a balanced understanding of Dunya will help us to adopt a middle path and not go onto either extremes of over-indulgence or undue deprivation. Both cause spiritual decline. Like a ship needs water to sail, we need Dunya, but when it enters our hearts, we will ‘drown’ spiritually. People often complain of not tasting the sweetness of Ibaadah; this is mainly because of being ‘bitten’ by the ‘snake of Dunya’. The cure… “Die before you die!”, for a dead man craves not for worldly things.
