In the anecdote discussed from the Mathnavi Shareef of Maulana Rumi (R), the Romans and the Chinese compete before the king in decoration. The Romans outdo the Chinese, simply by cleaning and polishing the walls of their area which then reflected the artwork of the Chinese appearing more beautiful than the original artwork. Maulana Rumi (R) thus points to the importance of Tazkiyatun-nafs, showing how the A’maal of the Ahlullah whose hearts are purified reflect more beautifully than that of the Aabideen (those who outwardly do a lot of Ibadah). The Qalandars are a category of Auliya Allah whose Nafl Ibadah is comparatively less, yet they are constantly in a state of Ihsan (Allah-consciousness). Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique RA surpassed the entire Ummah in Iman, not by virtue of Ibadah, but rather that spiritual treasure Allah SWT placed in his heart. Nabi-e-Kareem (SAW) declared a certain Sahabi to be ‘a man of Jannah’ by virtue of his keeping his heart ‘forever clean’ by not entertaining any ill feeling towards any Muslimeen. Further inspiring examples of such great levels of Ihsan are found in Ahlullah, such as Maulana Maseehullah (R) whose heart was like a mirror, and Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (R) whose heart lit up hundreds of hearts with the love of Allah SWT.
