Pearls from Mathnavi (P. 6) - Match for the Prince

Allah SWT blessed Maulana Rumi (R) with deep wisdom and intellect whereby he could explain complicated matters and important lessons through simple anecdotes. The anecdote discussed from the Mathnavi Shareef is about a king who seeks a match for his beloved and only son (the prince), which is an important responsibility of a parent. The Shariah emphasises compatibility in marriage (kufw) and Nabi-e-Kareem (SAW) gave preference to piety over the other factors for which a woman may be married. Piety is not based on appearance; piety encompasses conformity to Deenul Islam in all aspects of life, especially character and conduct, etc. Keep and refer to the books of Akabireen, which explain the spiritual maladies and their remedies, the commendable attributes and the method of acquisition. The prince is married to a beautiful and pious woman; however, they fail to produce offspring because he has been bewitched by an old and ugly woman. Sihr (black magic) is a reality, which is mentioned in the Quran and the Seerah of Nabi-e-Kareem (SAW) who himself was a victim. The Mu’min can be likened to the prince who has been bewitched by the ugly dunya, causing him to forget the beautiful princess of the Aakhirah. As in the story of the prince, cure has to be sought from the Spiritual Doctors (the Mashaaikh), so that the reality of this world becomes apparent and we set our gaze on the life of the Aakhirah.
