The Mathnavi Shareef of Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi (R) is a book of Ma’rifah and Muhabbah of Allah SWT. The pious Elders used to study and teach the Mathnavi Shareef, because the love Maulana Rumi (R) is transferred to the reader and the deep lessons derived from each story is a means of transformation. In the story of King Mahmood and Ayaaz, the king tests his ministers by ordering them to crush a valuable pearl from his treasury. All the ministers refuse, except for Ayaaz who crushed the pearl without hesitation. Ayaaz demonstrated that the jewel of loyalty in the heart is far more valuable than the treasures of this world. The lesson Maulana Rumi (R) draws from this story is that Allah SWT wishes to see the loyalty of His servants. The true spirit of unflinching obedience is learnt from the example of Ibraheem AS, who was prepared to sacrifice his beloved son Ismaeel AS without question. From the example of Abu Talha Ansari RA, we learn to give of our beloved possessions for the pleasure of Allah. The command of Allah SWT is more valuable than anything in the universe! Therefore, throughout our life we must be prepared to smash the beautiful pearl of our desires with the hammer of Allah’s order. Then, just as King Mahmood showered Ayaaz with many gifts as reward for his loyalty, Allah SWT will envelop His believing slaves in His Mercy and shower them with many favours and blessings.
