Bilal RA was a great man of Islam among the companions of Nabi SAW. Bilal RA origins was from Africa and his father was brought to Arabia as a slave. Allah Taala had given him a beautiful heart. He was the first amongst the slaves to accept the invitation of Islam. He suffered a lot of tortures. Ummaya bin Khalaf was his master, but he was so oppressive that he used to torture him in the day time, putting him on the hot sand of the desert. But his Iman was unshakable!
He was born in Makkah and was 10 years younger than Nabi SAW. One day, Abu Bakr RA went to his master and purchased Bilal RA. Umar RA used to give him lot of respect, he used to say “Bilal is our master, who was freed by our master!” When he was liberated, he dedicated his life to the service of Nabi SAW and became his family member, doing his work. He would take the charities and distribute it to the poor people. He participated in all the battles. When Allah Ta’ala revealed the command of Azaan, and it was assigned to Bilal RA. He was the chief Muazzin, also called the Muazzin of Rasullulah SAW. When Nabi SAW conquered Makkah he asked Bilal RA to give the Azan on the roof of the Kaaba. How Allah Ta’ala elevated the status of Bilal RA!
When Baital Maqdis was conquered by Umar RA Bilal RA was asked to give the Azan. Therefore he was not only Muazzin of Makkah, Madina, but also Masjid Aqsa! He was an amazing human being, of courage, firmness of Iman, humility, patience, contentment and loyalty. One day Nabi SAW said, “In the night of Miraj, I heard the footsteps of Bilal RA before me in Jannah!” Upon asking Bilal RA, he replied, every time I make wudhu, I pray two rakaats (tahityyul wudhu).
He passed away at the age of 70. He saw a dream of his death, but rejoiced and said “Tomorrow I’m is going to meet Nabi SAW and his Companions”. Allah be pleased with him.
