Hazrat Fudhail bin ‘Iyadh (R) once mentioned, ‘If you happen to make mention of worldly things in your gathering, then ensure to remember Allah SWT, since His remembrance is the cure for this ailment’. Regarding nifaaq (hypocrisy) he mentioned, ‘A Believer advises and admonishes in private, whereas the hypocrite abuses and disgraces in public’. Amongst the signs of the hypocrite is he likes to be praised for qualities he does not possess, and dislikes to be reprimanded for his bad qualities. He dislikes the one who reveals to him his faults, but is overjoyed at hearing the faults of others, due to vanity and pride. Hazrat Fudhail bin ‘Iyadh (R) explains, the difference between the munafiq and the Mu’min is the Mu’min plants a date tree fearing it may yield thorns, whereas the munafiq plants a thorn tree expecting it to blossom with dates. Regarding the effect of sins Hazrat Fudhail bin ‘Iyadh (R) says, ‘When I happen to disobey Allah SWT, I notice the effects of that in the character of my servants and animals’. He further says, as a result of excessive sinning a person is afflicted with the lack of resolve to do Pious deeds, corrupt understanding and thinking, and seeking worldly benefit by means of Ibadah. Regarding the importance of shukr he mentioned, ‘Continue to be appreciative and make shukr for the bounties of Allah SWT, for seldom do they return to a person once snatched away’. Lastly, from amongst the beautiful advices of Hazrat Fudhail bin ‘Iyadh (R), he mentioned ‘How wonderful are the beggars who take our provisions of the Aakhirah without any fee, and deposit it for us in our scale of good deeds’.
