On the doorstep of Rajab
Jumuah, at Musjid ut Taqwa on February 12, 2021
We are on the threshold of the significant month of Rajab, also known by the beautiful names of Shahrullah (the month of Allah), Mu’alla (the lofty month) and Mutahhar (the pure month). Allah Ta’ala explains in the Qur’an that the year is based on a 12 month cycle, this system of timekeeping having been adopted since the creation of the world. The 150-year activities and detailed records of the ‘Maankykers’ of Cape Town demonstrates the attachment Muslim communities should have towards moonsighting, which is a Fardh-Kifayah (compulsory) duty. Rajab is one of the four auspicious months in the Islamic calendar, in which the rewards for Ibadah and the retribution for sins is multiplied. It signifies the beginning of a high spiritual season, which Nabi-Kareem Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam would commence with reciting the beautiful Du’a seeking Barakah in the months of Rajab and Sha’ban, and to reach Ramadan. Start preparation in earnest from the outset of Rajab, with a strong intention and ‘winds’ of Ibadah, to gain from the spiritual rains of Ramadan, and Allah Ta’ala in His Mercy will grant us the reward. Spend some time in Ibadah on the first night of Rajab, identified by Imam Shafi’ (R) from amongst the nights of special acceptance of Du’a. Considering the many warning signs and reminders, be in a state of preparedness and use this window of opportunity from Allah Ta’ala to put one’s affairs in order.
