Importance of Tajweed
Islahi Majlis, at Musjid ut Taqwa on January 18, 2021
As we are approaching the Mubarak month of Ramadan, we should begin preparing by increasing in Tilawah, however, the Qur’an has to be recited with proper pronunciation to secure the full reward. Allah Ta’ala instructs the Believers to recite the Qur’an with ‘Tarteel’ i.e. proper measure, defined by Sayyidina Ali (RA) as reading the Qur’an with correct Tajweed, knowing where and how to stop, pause and recommence. Amongst the favours of Allah Ta’ala upon mankind is that He sent us Nabi-Kareem Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, part of his mission being to teach the Qur’an to the Ummah, which was taught to him by Jibra’il (AS). Nabi-Kareem Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam warned against being of those whom the Qur’an curses, “Is this the way I should be recited?!” Allah save us! It is for this reason that great Ulama of the Ummah have worked tirelessly to explain the rules of Tajweed, including Allamah Jazari’s eloquent and poetic expression where he exhorts, “To hold tight unto the rules of Tajweed is absolutely compulsory.” For every letter of Qur’an read, a believer secures ten rewards, but if a person fails to pronounce the letters properly out of negligence, how can he be rewarded? Simple examples illustrate how the meaning may be distorted through mispronunciation or failing to pause or stop appropriately. The one who struggles to read the Qur’an despite every effort will get double the reward, and the rules of Tajweed are simple and few, therefore we should make a concerted effort and continue to strive to perfect our recitation of Qur’an!
