Beware of arrogance and ingratitude, be humble and grateful - Avondale Musallah

“Allah Ta’ala gives respect to whomsoever He wishes and He disgraces whomsoever He wishes”. Those who are ignorant are foolish and unaware that respect and disgrace is from Allah Ta’ala alone and is not in the control of man. One should not look for respect in the things of this world. Allah Ta’ala’s system is that there is a constant state of flux and change in this world. There are those who previously owned empires and today are the recipients of zakaat, and there are those who were in the doldrums and Allah Ta’ala elevated them, therefore we should never become arrogant if Allah Ta’ala gives, nor should we look down on those who don’t have. At all times, as our Akaabir have said, there must be no ‘Takabbur’ (pride), but there must be ‘Tashakkur’, which is to acknowledge Allah Ta’ala’s favour every step of the way. Important lessons are learnt from the story of ‘Mahmood and Ayaaz’. A person should strive to become that which Allah Ta’ala has praised in the Quran - ‘An Nafsul Lawwama’ – that soul which engages in ‘muhasabah’ (introspection), and reprimands and chides itself. In any situation, difficulty or calamity, take inspiration first from the Quran by taking those ayats applicable to our situation and reciting them repeatedly till it settles in the heart. We should attempt to memorise these short ayats as the consolation acquired from these words will never be gained by the words of man.
