Allah Ta’ala honoured His Habib, our beloved Nabi Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam in the Qur’an with the beautiful title Rahmatul lil-‘Alameen [107:21]. The Ummah is so fortunate that Allah is Rabbul-‘Alameen, our Nabi is Rahmatul lil-‘Alameen, Baytullah is Hudal lil-‘Alameen and the Qur’an is Dhikrul lil-‘Alameen; everything is universal! The mercy of Nabi-Karim Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam extends to every makhluq, animate and inanimate, including the disbelievers who are saved from destruction befalling them like nations of the past, giving them ample opportunity to find guidance and revert to Islam, and who are protected by rights and laws even in war. Examples of his vast mercy to animals are found in the incidents of the camel which complained to him about exploitation by his owner, his reprimanding Sahabah (RA) who caused distress to a bird by taking her chicks, and in the humane teachings of qurbani. Nabi-Karim Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was a mercy to the downtrodden, weak, poor, oppressed, orphans, widows, and to women who were subjected to atrocious treatment in the time of Jahiliyyah, his eyes filling with tears upon hearing of the burial of a young girl by her father. He will be a mercy for those guilty of major sins on Yawmul Qiyamah by interceding on their behalf, not becoming pleased until none of his Ummah remain in the fire of Jahannam. Our duty as his Ummah is to become embodiments of mercy to the creation, and in turn Allah will show mercy to us.
