The Importance of WAQF in Islam - Pearl's Musallah, Umhlanga

Special Programme, at Umhlanga on December 14, 2020

Waqf is one of the most powerful institutions in Islam, which has been used very effectively to further the cause of Deen and serve the needs of the Ummah in a beautiful way. It is very unfortunate that we have lost the concept of Waqf in the last century. The need of the time is to revive the concept of Waqf in the Ummah. It is possible for every ordinary Muslim to have a share in Waqf, as even a small contribution earns one the rewards in perpetuity! Nabi-Karim Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam made Waqf of seven orchards in Madinah Munawarrah - the first Waqf in the history of Islam - prompting the Sahaba (RA) to follow suit, every one of them leaving behind a Waqf and establishing the various formats in which a Waqf can be formed. There are countless avenues that can be supported through Waqf; what level of altruism, philanthropy and compassion there was in the Ummah that every need was taken care of through the establishment of various Awqaf! From the history of Waqf it can be seen that the Ummah of the past had a passion and a “fashion” of doing good deeds, and even today there are countless examples of successful Awqaf abroad and locally. Remember, it is better to have a rich Ummah and poor individuals than to have rich individuals and a poor Ummah!
