Responding to the Coronavirus

Jumuah, at Musjid ut Taqwa on January 31, 2020

The coronavirus is dominating the world headlines. The world is in turmoil. It impacts on the life and health of people, but also has a huge economic effect. Contagious diseases like the plagues in the past affected 1000s at a time. The hadith is very clear and open- when you are inside an area wherein the disease has started, do not leave. Be patient, put your trust in Allah and what has been decreed will `come to pass. And if you are outside the area, do not enter it. There will be those within the area who will survive through the will of Allah Ta’ala. Do not take unnecessary risks and `do not expose yourself to destruction. By giving up the effort of Deen we expose ourselves to destruction. Do not panic, the plague is not a punishment for the Mu’mineen, it is a Rahmah and they will gain the maut of a Shaheed.
Islam has emphasised so much of hygiene- washing hands, using the miswaak, removal of hair and clipping of nails, we are not allowed to eat things that could be potential carriers of disease and viruses. This is the Rahmah and beauty of Islam. The world is making bold claims about banning the niqab- now Allah shows the world, how millions are forced to cover their faces with masks!
