Waqf - a forgotten Sunnah - Musjid-e-Noor, Asherville
Jumuah, at Musjid-e-Noor, Asherville on October 27, 2017
Waqf is very important in Islam. Through this deed, a person gets huge rewards, even after his death. Waqf refers to the dedication of some valuable goods – land, a building, or even money in the path of Allah. The proceeds can be used for the upliftment of the society, poor, needy or orphans etc.
Allah Ta’ala informs us about the highest degree of piety that one will not reach to the highest degree of piety if one does not spend in the path of Allah what is dearest (most beloved) to one. Sahaba (RA) were the best among all in practicing and implementing the Quran in their daily lives. So upon hearing this Ayat, Abu Talha Ansari (RA) searched his whole property and found his date orchards the most beloved to him. He presented this orchard to Nabi Kareem (SAW) and said; “O Nabi! (SAW) I have come to you to present this orchard in charity to please Allah Ta’ala” But Nabi (SAW) advised him to make Waqf this property so that the ownership remains with Allah and the proceeds be given among needy relatives, poor people. Nabi Kareem (SAW) was the first to make Waqf his property. Sayyidnah Ayesha (RA), Umme Salama (RA), Umme Habiba (RA), Abu Bakr (RA), Hazrat Ali (RA), Hazrat Umar (RA), Sayyida Hafsa (RA) made Waqf their properties for many classes of beneficiaries like travelers, needy, poor, orphan and other noble causes.
The Waqf of Usman (RA) was amazing. Usmaan (RA) came forward to purchase a well to make water easily available to people. So it is a Sadaqah Jaariya for Usman (RA) till today. We need to revive this Sunnah and should make an intention to do Waqf. May Allah Ta’ala give us tawfeeq (Aameen)
