2 Actions of the Day of Aashura - Fasting & Spending on the family

Special Programme, at Musjid ut Taqwa on October 11, 2016

The Jews of Madinah fasted the day of Aashura in gratitude for Musa AS and the Bani Israeel being granted salvation by Allah SWT from Firaun. Nabi-e-Kareem ((SAW exhorted the fast of the day of Aashura and in order to oppose the ways of the Jews, encouraged the Sahaba RA to fast the day of Aashura, and either the day before or the day after. The fast of Aashura is one of great virtue, the reward for which is forgiveness by Allah SWT of the sins of the previous year. Nabi-e-Kareem ((SAW said, ‘the one who spends generously on his family on the day of Aashura, Allah SWT will spend generously on him throughout the year’. A person should spend a little more than normal on food items or necessities for their family members, however Islam is the path of balance and moderation therefore we should avoid extravagance and spend only within our means. The attempts to commercialize aspects of our Deen such as Aashura gifts and meals must be avoided. The first lesson of Aashura is that from the beginning of time there has been a continuous struggle between truth and falsehood, and this struggle will continue till the end of time. When falsehood came in the form of Firaun, Allah SWT brought truth in the form of Musa AS. Eventually Allah SWT delivered Musa AS and the Bani Israeel from the oppression of Firaun, therefore the second lesson to be drawn from Aashura is that Allah SWT will grant victory to truth and falsehood will be vanquished. Karbala and the martyrdom of the beloved grandson of our Rasool ((SAW Sayyidina Hussain bin Ali RA was a dark event in the history of Islam which occurred tragically on the day of Aashura. Despite this there is no special commemmoration or mourning of the shahadah of Sayyidina Hussain RA as there have been many other martyrs in the history of Islam. Allah SWT has selected the Shaheed and elevated him, therefore we do not mourn him but take him as the role model which Allah has given us to emulate. It is through the desire to serve the Deen and the sacrifice of Allah’s chosen servants that truth and Deenul Islam will prevail over falsehood.
