The anecdote \u2018The Different Opinions on an Elephant\u2019 from the Mathnavi of Maulana Rumi (R) is very relevant to our times. Each person who felt a different part of the Elephant drew a conclusion about what an Elephant is! Only once the light of morning came, their misconceptions were removed. Misunderstandings can occur when each person draws a conclusion based on their own perception or limited understanding of a matter. The reality of the situation will only become apparent on the Day of Qiyamah, or when a proper understanding is gained in light of Qur\u2019an and Hadith. Differences of opinion have existed in the Ummah from the time of the Sahabah-e-Kiraam RA; despite this those who practiced on Deen properly treated each other with mutual love and respect. We should therefore accept that differences of opinion will occur and it is not harmful, but rather a mercy. Nabi-e-Kareem (SAW) explained that the qualified person who draws a correct opinion based on evidence will get double the reward, and if his conclusion was wrong, he will still be rewarded for making effort to reach the correct conclusion. However, those who create fitna and dissension as a result of differences of opinion will be taken to task by Allah SWT on the Day of Qiyamah. A Qur\u2019an with a misprint won\u2019t be read but will be treated with the utmost reverence. Similarly, we may not follow a particular view, but there is no room for disrespect. \u2018Ulama must be held in high esteem for the knowledge Allah SWT has placed in their hearts. If we adopt this path of moderation, we will always remain on Siraatul Mustaqeem.<\/p>\n
