After Iman the fundamental duty upon every Muslim is to acquire knowledge, as lacking that knowledge there can be no practice on any aspect of Islam. When a person understands the virtue and benefits of knowledge it will spur him towards the acquisition of knowledge. Allah SWT has ensured that knowledge of Deen is preserved in almost every language of the world, and has made ample means for the acquisition of knowledge through the variety of platforms available to us so there is no excuse for anyone to remain ignorant. Knowledge surpasses Ibadah as it prevents one from going astray, induces one to practice and enables one to teach others which is the greatest form of sadaqah. We have to improve our absorption rate by having the correct attitude, intention and attention; then a person will gain. Knowledge is a Nur which when absorbed into the spiritual blood stream creates a spiritual stamina that drives amal. Retention therefore is not the same as absorption which is most important, however we should still try to retain as much as possible. The students in Darul Ulooms are required to follow three steps when acquiring knowledge: Mutaala\u2019ah \u2013 read the future lesson, Hazari \u2013 attendance with attention, and Takrar \u2013 revision; through these steps knowledge becomes firmly embedded in the heart. A person who is eager will follow these steps even for majalis so at the time of need the lesson will be remembered.<\/p>\n
