A unique method of introspection (Muhasaba)
A unique method of Muhasabah (introspection) – this article was authored by Imam-e-Rabbani, Hz Mujaddid Alfe-Thani (R) who was one of the greatest Auliyaa of the time. The practise of Muhasabah-e-nafs which is to examine one’s verbal utterances, practical actions and other activites before retiring to bed is found in all the silsila of the Auliya and Mashaaikh. The prescription of this practise is based on the narration ‘Take stock of yourself before your stock is taken’. A person reflects on his actions, makes taubah, rectifies his shortcomings, and does not repeat those misdeeds in the hope of attaining forgiveness before having to account to Allah SWT on the day of Qiyamah. According to Hz Mujaddid Alfe-Thani (R) the recitation of the phrases ‘Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar’ a hundred times before going to sleep fulfills the order of Muhasabah in a unique manner. Repeating Subhanallah serves as an elaborate form of repentance and deep introspection as a person is acknowledging the Purity and Greatness of Allah SWT which if pondered upon would have caused him to not to venture near to sin. In the repetition of Alhamdulillah gratitude for the bounties of Allah, including the taufeeq for any good deeds or acts of virtue performed that day is expressed. By repeating Allahu-Akbar, absolute unworthiness in the court of Allah SWT is implied, as the offering of our excuses, gratitude and amal do not befit the Grandeur of Allah SWT at all. It is for this reason Mashaaikh had prescribed these phrases of Tasbeeh. Tahmeed and Takbeer morning and evening, and by concentrating on the meaning then such a practise is not only a Zikr or Wazifa but also encompasses the practise of Muhasabah.
