Company and the effect of Social Media groups
One of the most important factors which contribute to our success in Deen, dunya and Aakhirah is the right choice of friends and literature. Companionship and friendship being such which benefits or destroys a person is explained in the Ahadith through the analogy of a good friend being like that person who sells perfume, and a bad friend being like a blacksmith. The good friend has a heart, soul and actions which are fragranced with Allah Ta'ala's love and obedience. The company of the righteous and pious inclines one to virtuous deeds and leads one to piety, resulting in a pleasant and comfortable life in this world and the Aakhirah. The company of a bad friend whose heart is ablaze with the fire of sin creates darkness and restlessness in a person, and affects their Iman. Friends who are materialistically inclined create in a person the love and desire of material things which paves the way to sin and destruction. The hearts of kufr are the ‘jammers’ of Iman which cause a person’s Aqeedah to become shaky and creates doubts in their hearts. It is in the nature of man to ‘steal’ from the character of another person to the extent that he will adopt the same way of life, culture and even the religion of his friend. We therefore need to be very selective on who we take as friends, what literature we read, which social circles and social media groups we are in. These are all very influential means of making us successful or making us failures in both worlds.
