Role of Muslims in the country's affairs

Jumuah, at Westville on March 31, 2017

Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:”Your actions are your rulers.”
We are in a critical condition, not only in this country but globally. We should heed the advices of our pious elders and predecessors. We need to be aware of the events happening around us. We cannot live in isolation and insulation. Our actions decide our future and destiny. However we live in a world of means. Side by side with adopting the correct actions and amal, there are certain means that have to be adopted as well.
Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) himself adopted certain means e.g. When he arrived in Madinah, he met with the non Muslim leaders of Madinah and drafted a treaty with them (the first written constitution in the world). Thus we see that Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) adopted all the means from a worldly point of view, thereafter he placed his trust in Allah SWT. Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:” Tie your camel, then place your trust in Allah SWT.” This is a world of means, of cause and effect. We are instructed to adopt the means and follow the course, thereafter Allah SWT will show the result.
We thus find that Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) took great measures and steps to safeguard the interest of the Muslim Ummah. In the Battle of Uhud, Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) proceeded to the battle, amazingly with double armour (for additional safety and protection). This is a constant lesson we find in the life of Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and the Sahaba (radi allaho anhum), that they took the necessary measures and means, then adopted Tawakkul.
Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would also hold Mashwera (counsel) with the Sahaba (radi allaho anhum). There is great benefit, importance and protection in Mashwera. In consulting, the hearts become united and Allah SWT inspires the hearts with solutions and ideas. We need to bring back this practice of Mashwera from the highest levels (government or state) to the lowest level (in the homes). A lot of conflicts, ill feelings, doubts and misgivings are created when Mashwera is discarded.
We as the Muslim Ummah need to play our role in our country. We cannot be spectators and armchair critics. Whatever means we can adopt, we should adopt. We should make ourselves aware of the happening and events around us. We should correct our actions, attitudes and way of life. We should become the ambassadors of Islam and project the teachings of Islam.
