Ignorance - a spiritual malady

Islahi Majlis, at Musjid ut Taqwa on August 22, 2016

Allah Ta’ala repeatedly mentions in the Holy Quran that success of the Aakhirah lies in the purification of the heart. We should strive in this world to purify the heart so that spiritual diseases which pollute the Ruh do not accompany us to the life of the Hereafter. Ignorance (Jahalah) is one such spiritual disease for which cure must be sought. Nabi-e-Kareem (SAW) prescribed a simple cure for the malady of ignorance in the acquisition of knowledge, the virtue of which is mentioned in many Ahadith. Knowledge is what differentiates human beings from the Malaaikah as Allah SWT gave Aadam AS the knowledge of all the things in the Universe. All discoveries and inventions are simply a manifestation of this knowledge. The knowledge of Nabi-e-Kareem (SAW) encompassed that of all those who came before and those who will come after, yet Allah SWT commanded him to ask for an increase in knowledge. We should therefore not be content but have a desire and make a conscious effort to acquire more knowledge. There are many examples of Pious Elders who were not Ulama in the technical sense having not acquired a formal qualification from a Darul Uloom, but they possessed astounding knowledge from which many great Ulama have benefitted. The knowledge acquired will be personified as a beautiful companion who will remain with a person in the Qabr until Qiyamah
